Season’s Greetings

Another festive season is upon us, and as we are wont to do at the end of every year, we look back at all the articles that went up in 2019 and we snuffle out our five favourite foodie knowledge nuggets.

1. Berry Berry Good for You – The Benefits of Superfood Berries

Blueberries are a great source of vitamin K and contain antioxidant polyphenols called anthocyanins which may reduce oxidative stress, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease. They also lower the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in the blood, may lower the risk of diabetes, and a study has shown that people who eat blueberries have slower rates of cognitive decline.

2. Meat MythCrushers - Seeing the Full Picture.

Food safety myth: If meat turns brown, that means it’s spoiled.

Fact: Red meat products are somewhat like sliced apples. Their colour can change rapidly – even though the product is still safe and wholesome. In fact, retail stores often discount red meat products that have changed colour but are still safe and well within their shelf life.

3. Foodie Influencers & Wholesale Meat South Africa – The Power of Social Media in Food

Of all the channels, Instagram is probably the most popular platform for foodies with 800 million monthly active users, over 95 million photos uploaded every day and more than 40 billion photos shared so far – staggering isn’t it?!

4. Quality Meat Cape Town & JHB - Hot Tips for Profitable Snack Menus

The trend for snack menus ties in with the fact that we definitely ‘graze’ more than we used to – market research firm, Datassential, found that ‘95% of consumers had a snack the previous day and that most of them ate an average of four to five snacks per day outside breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition, some 60% of consumers believe any food could qualify as a snack.’

5. Nootropic Foods – The New Brain-Healthy Foods

The word nootropic was coined in 1972 by Roman psychologist and chemist, Corneuliu E Giurgea, and is derived from the Greek words for ‘mind’ and to ‘bend or turn’. Giurgea was in the business of pharmaceuticals and applied the word to a set of drugs that should be able to enhance learning and memory. Fast forward a few years and nootropic supplements or ‘smart drugs’ are all the rage, but luckily for us, much of the benefit that can be gained from these synthetically produced supplements already exists in nature and we can derive similar benefits by including brain-healthy foods such as caffeine, nuts, leafy greens, avocado, eggs, berries and oily fish – in our diets.

And on that informative note, the N1 team would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your ongoing support and goodwill throughout the year! We wish you all the joys of the festive season, may it be a safe and blessed time for all – Season’s Greetings & Happy Holidays Everyone!
