Food Tech at CES 2023

As leading suppliers of the best quality meat Cape Town and Johannesburg have to offer, N1 prides itself on keeping abreast of all the great trends and developing technologies in the food industry. And that includes keeping a close eye on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) - an annual trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada that showcases the latest and most innovative consumer electronics products and technologies from around the world. While it’s not solely focused on the food and beverage industry, it does feature a section called ‘Food Tech’ that showcases the latest technology and innovation related to food production, preparation, and delivery.

And these are our top 5 products for 2023:

1. Bespoke AI Oven
Samsung presented a variety of pioneering kitchen appliances, including their Bespoke AI Oven. This oven incorporates an internal camera and AI to detect potential burning risks when preparing recognised dishes using the recommended cooking mode, temperature, and time. In the event of a potential issue, the user receives a notification. Not only that, but the oven uses data analysis of the user's dietary and exercise goals to suggest recipes based on ingredients already available in the user's home.

2. Nuvi Scanner
Nuvilab, a Korean food tech company, has developed an app called Nuvi Scanner that aims to address food waste and promote better nutrition choices. With Nuvi Scanner, users can take a picture of their food, and the AI analyses the dish's calorie and nutrient content while identifying the most frequently leftover foods. This technology can benefit not only individuals interested in monitoring their calorie intake and nutrition but also restaurants wanting to assess how much and what kind of food customers leave on their plates.

3. Carbon Footprint Analyser
Greenswapp, a company based in Amsterdam, has developed a tool that allows restaurants to calculate the carbon footprint of their menu items. By utilising life cycle analysis, Greenswapp tracks the environmental impact of a product from production to processing, packaging, and delivery. This method enables the company to determine the overall environmental impact of the menu item. The ultimate goal of Greenswapp is to provide restaurants with valuable information to make informed purchasing decisions that are environmentally responsible.

4. Smart Cutting Board
Blok introduced its latest innovation, a smart cutting board. The wooden board features a detachable screen that allows users to watch cooking classes and follow step-by-step recipes while preparing food. When not in use, the cutting board can be charged wirelessly using its charging base. Blok has dubbed this gadget as ‘The Peloton of the Kitchen’, suggesting that it aims to revolutionise the cooking experience by incorporating interactive and immersive technology into the culinary arts.

5. SavorEat
Israel-based company SavorEat has developed a proprietary 3D printing technology that enables its robot to produce meatless burgers. In addition to this, the company has created an ordering system that allows customers to customise their burger by choosing the protein-to-fat ratio, patty size, and preferred level of doneness, from rare to well-done. The machine can produce up to three burgers simultaneously, and the final product is ready in about six minutes.
