The Foodie Bucket List

The term ‘bucket list’ originated with a 2007 movie of the same name in which Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman portray two terminally ill men on a road trip with a wish list of things to do before they ‘kick the bucket’ – an uplifting movie, despite the theme. The phrase has become part of our 21st-century lexicon and has inspired many of us to think about the things we’d like to do, see or accomplish before we shuffle off this mortal coil so to speak.

Of course, your bucket list will be determined by what you’re passionate about, but if you’re a foodie, there’s no shortage of delights! If you fancy an overseas bucket list – this is a wish list, after all, so you can be as audacious as you like – then there are probably three places that should top your list:

1. The French Laundry – USA!
Anthony Bourdain once called this ‘the best restaurant in the world’, and with three Michelin Stars you can’t go wrong. Located in California and home to the exceptional chef, Thomas Keller, the French Laundry is known the world over for its fabulous tasting menu.

2. Mirazur – France!
The Argentine-born Mauro Colagreco’s restaurant on the French Riviera has been named World’s Best Restaurant for 2019! His tasting menu includes dishes like salt-crusted beetroot with caviar cream; and brioche of potatoes with melting egg and white truffle.

3. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant – Maldives!
Probably one of the most exotic restaurants in the world, this eatery rests five metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean. It opened in 2005 and was the very first underwater restaurant of its kind. It specialises in Maldivian cuisine and promises the most panoramic coral garden views.

In addition to fabulous places to dine, there are also a wide variety of other culinary experiences one can look forward to accomplishing.

You can create your very own signature dish for example. Just like all the top-notch chefs in the world have their own signature dish, so too should a fabulous foodie – provided you can cook of course.  Think about what your go-to dish is, what you’re always asked to bring along to parties because everyone loves eating it, and then perfect it. Or how about learning to cook the perfect steak, which according to Gordon Ramsay is all about a very hot pan and olive oil to first sear the steak, then adding roughly crushed garlic and thyme, and finally adding butter, turning the steaks every minute!

Whatever your home kitchen foodie bucket list experience is, it should always start with exceptionally good ingredients, and for the best quality non-Halaal and Halaal certified meat (please link to Home page) products you can always rely on N1 – not only are they the leading suppliers of wholesale meat in South Africa, but they’re also staffed by the greatest food lovers so you’ll always be in the best hands!
