N1 Restaurant Suppliers, to cater for the expanding needs of their Halaal customers, opened an independent factory in 2001 purely for the purpose of Halaal food production. N1 source only the best Halaal meat, poultry, fish and vegetable products from reputable quality suppliers. And in keeping with their dedication to certification and accreditation to ensure the best quality products possible, N1 carry ICSA (Islamic Council of South Africa) and MJC (The Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa) Halaal Accreditation.
In ‘Halaal Meat South Africa’ we examined the history and principles of Halaal, and in this ‘Halaal Certified Meat’ we look more closely at the slaughter process and the Islamic Council accreditation.
As defined by the Codex Alimentarius Commission in its ‘General Guidelines for Use of the Term “Halal”’ it is imperative that only lawful foods are selected and that the following criteria are strictly adhered to during the slaughter process to ensure the end products are considered Halaal:
- “The person [performing the slaughter] should be a Muslim who is mentally sound and knowledgeable of the Islamic slaughtering procedures.
- The animal to be slaughtered should be lawful according to Islamic law [plus the animal must have been fed a natural diet free from animal by-products].
- The animal to be slaughtered should be alive or deemed to be alive at the time of slaughtering.
- The phrase “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah) should be invoked immediately before the slaughter of each animal.
- The slaughtering device should be sharp and should not be lifted off the animal during the slaughter act.
- The slaughter act should sever the trachea, oesophagus and main arteries and veins of the neck region” [the animal must then be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry].
In choosing to be ICSA and MJC Halaal accredited, N1 understand the importance of strict compliance to these Halaal rules, and that the process is long-term with ongoing monitoring.
The MJC was established in 1945 and it was the first such authority to be active in Halaal certification. The MJC Halaal Trust is supported by a group of highly qualified Hygiene Specialists and Food Technologists and it serves as the ‘Halaal Conscience’ of the Muslim Community by ensuring that all foods conform strictly to Halaal standards.
The ICSA Halaal Trust was established in 1975 after it was felt that a unifying platform was needed to enable the community to become a living and prosperous part of the World Muslim Community.
Both Halaal Trusts are highly regarded in the Muslim Community, and by choosing ICSA and MJC accreditation, N1 Restaurant Suppliers – today a leading wholesale supplier of Halaal end products – can safely guarantee Halaal customers only the best in high-quality, Halaal-certified meat and frozen vegetables.
